FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

This year the Hortense Miller Garden in Laguna Beach, California celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with two special events. In 1959 Hortense and Oscar Miller completed the design and construction of their North Laguna home and moved onto the hillside property. From that date until her death on July 28, 2008, most of Hortense’s life was spent at her home, developing and maintaining her now famous garden.

Hortense Miller was a true original thinker, prolific writer and artist and a thoughtful gardener. She created a lush and personal world in her garden.  Hidden at the end of a private road in Laguna Beach, the garden encompasses two and one half steep acres of a canyon with an ocean view. Home to more than 1200 species, this world-class vertical garden is a major living resource for the Mediterranean-climate plants suited to the conditions of Southern California. The mid-century modern residence has virtually been untouched for years and contains Hortense’s works of art and furniture from that era. The Friends of the Hortense Miller Garden maintain the home and the garden in conjunction with the City of Laguna Beach. Hortense passed away last year at nearly 100 years of age.
